Miraah will be one of the world’s largest solar plants

Glasspoint to complete Oman project in 2017

MUSCAT, May 23, 2016

Glasspoint Solar, a leader in solar enhanced oil recovery (EOR), is on track to produce steam at the Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)’s Amal oilfield in southern Oman before the end of 2017, said a senior company official.

The construction of the project is ahead of its schedule, Rod MacGregor president and CEO of Glasspoint Solar, was quoted as saying in the Times of Oman report.

The project will harness the sun’s rays to produce steam, which will be used to extract heavy and viscous oil, it said.

The project was awarded to Glasspoint by PDO in July last year.

It has been named as Miraah, following the success of the pilot project in Amal.

MacGregor added that Miraah will generate an average of 6,000 tonnes of solar steam daily for oil production.

The project will save 5.6 trillion British Thermal Units (BTUs) of natural gas each year, the amount of gas that could be used to provide residential electricity to the people in Oman, added the report.
