Over 100 brands participating at Dubai design event

DUBAI, October 28, 2016

More than 100 brands from 28 countries, carefully curated for their quality, originality and relevance to the regional buyer, are participating at the ongoing Downtown Design expo, in Dubai, UAE.

The event which kicked off on October 25 will conclude later today (October 28), at Dubai Design District (d3).

Downtown Design, the only trade show in the Middle East for professionals to discover original, high quality design from across the world, is being held under the patronage of Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice chairman, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.

Exhibitors span 15 categories ranging from sustainable furniture to statement lighting, to the latest in workplace innovation and kitchen and bathroom technology, said a statement.

On inaugurating Downtown Design, patron of the event, Sheikha Latifa said: “The event reflects strong regional demand for high quality design, and offers an important platform to bring together design professionals from across the region and further afield, to share ideas and cross-cultural exchanges in creative dialogues in line with Dubai’s vision to develop into an international hub for innovation and the creative economy.”

“The expo’s success exemplifies the commercial viability of the design industry and the rapidly increasing regional market for diverse sectors of the field, including interior design and furnishings, smart technology, architecture and fashion,” she said.

Positioned as a ‘fair of discovery’, the expo brings the established iconic and new-to-the-market design brands from around the world together under one roof. This year, the fair has 43 new exhibitors including international brands Bernhardt, Kettal, Sancal and Swarovski; with Arclinea, Gaggenau, Georg Jensen, and Moroso returning after a successful fair last year, it said.

A total of 13 regional brands will exhibit including CCC by Cecilia Setterdahl; NM Collections and Pallavi Dean from the UAE; Samovar Carpets from Kuwait and Etqaan from Egypt; launching graphic textiles, inlaid marquetry, living green walls, glass chandeliers and jewelled consoles – all designed or made in the region, it added.

For the second year, the Italian Trade Agency’s Italian Luxury Interiors Pavilion is showcasing an array of luxury artisanal brands which epitomise the sought-after ‘Made in Italy’ marque; and, in a unique partnership with international design weeks from Addis Ababa, Barcelona, Beirut, Reykjavik and Taipei, fledgling design brands debut unique, innovative products for the first time at an international level in Dubai.

Fair director of Downtown Design Rue Kothari, said: “Exposing the breadth and diversity of brands in the Middle East, the event recognises the importance of locality in regional interior design.”

“With the development of new hotels, commercial and public buildings, there comes a need for interior design to reflect the region’s graphic language, design narrative and love of colour. Our exhibitors present a truly broad range of unique solutions to creating a distinctly local, contemporary space,” Kothari added.

Downtown Design provides a gateway to the region for international brands and, along with its expanding buyers programme, provides fertile ground for business exchange and networking, said a statement.

Many of the brands will be accompanied by the designers they work with offering visitors the chance to really get behind the brands. This year, internationally-acclaimed international designers Edward Van Vliet and Doshi Levien join Moroso; Laura Kirar will be present at Kohler’s booth; with Nadja Swarvoski, member of the Swarovski executive board, present for the Middle Eastern debut of Atelier Swarovski Home, it added.

Mohammad Saeed Al Shehhi, chief operating officer of d3, said: “Dubai Design District is delighted to again be the home for the expo which now is in its fourth season.”

“As a leading design fair that attracts many international brands through its doors, hosting such events is important for us as a district as they support our greater vision to make Dubai a recognised global design destination, as well as allowing our own residents and business partners to see at first hand some of the latest design trends taking place within the industry,” he added. – TradeArabia News Service
