Top Saudi delegation holds meetings with IMO

RIYADH, July 26, 2017

A high level delegation from Saudi Arabia is currently participating in board meetings of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), being held at its headquarters in London, UK.

The meeting which kicked off on July 24 will run until July 28.

The kingdom’s high-profile delegation was led by Sulaiman bin Abdullah Al-Hamdan, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Transport; Dr Rumaih bin Mohammed Al Rumaih, president of the Public Transport Authority; senior Bahri officials including Wael Al Sarhan, senior vice president – marketing; and Abdulaziz Sabri, vice president, Bahri Ship Management, as well as other representatives from the maritime sector in the kingdom, said a statement.

During the meeting, the delegation met with the secretary-general of IMO, Kitack Lim, to review the kingdom’s efforts in the maritime transportation sector, with discussions ranging from the security and safety of its territorial waters and its fight against piracy to marine environment protection, it said.

The meeting comes as part of the kingdom’s preparations to submit its candidacy for the membership of the IMO Council under Category (C), it added.

The kingdom, represented by Bahri, a global leader in transportation and logistics, will host the members of IMO today (July 26), to review the efforts initiated by the various stakeholders, said a statement.

During the visit, IMO members will explore the tremendous growth achieved by Bahri, the world’s largest owner and operator of Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), with a fleet of 86 tankers and vessels operating across sectors, with one of its new VLCCs, ‘Amjad’, securing its registration under the Saudi flag in April earlier this year.

In addition to its commitment to playing a significant role in contributing to Saudi Vision 2030, the company is continuously expanding and developing its services, thus opening up new trade routes and strengthening the kingdom’s position as a unique regional gateway to three continents in logistics, it stated. – TradeArabia News Service
