Emirates SkyCargo signs MoU with Dubai CommerCity

DUBAI, November 19, 2017

Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dubai CommerCity, the first free zone dedicated to e-commerce in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region located in Dubai, UAE.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive officer, Emirates airline and Group; Nabil Sultan, Emirates Divisional senior vice president, Cargo; and Dr Mohammed Al Zarooni, director general - Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority (Dafza), said a statement from the company.

Emirates SkyCargo will work with Dubai CommerCity to develop new solutions for the global e-commerce sector, it said.

E-commerce is a growing vertical for the air cargo industry worldwide and Emirates SkyCargo is working with stakeholders across the supply chain to identify the best methods to add value to the e-commerce business, it added.

Nabil Sultan, Emirates’ divisional vice president, Cargo, said: “Every day our company transports a large volume of e-commerce shipments as part of our mail or general cargo offerings.”

“We are progressing to the next step where we cooperate more closely with e-retailers with the ultimate aim of getting products to customers even more quickly and cost effectively,” he said.

“Dubai CommerCity, with its focus on e-commerce, can be an ideal platform for us to develop and roll out new solutions as well as technology that can be used to improve the speed, efficiency and safety of e-commerce shipments,” he added.

Dr Mohammed Al Zarooni, director general, Dafza, said: “We are delighted to partner with Emirates SkyCargo, one of the world's largest air cargo carriers, and we are confident that it will be a major boost to our strategic goals of making Dubai CommerCity a unified platform for government, administrative and customs services and logistics to help meet the needs of the e-commerce sector, in line with the Dubai government’s efforts towards achieving comprehensive and sustainable development and provide an exceptional experience for its investors.”

“The cooperation between Emirates SkyCargo and Dubai CommerCity will enable us to strengthen Dubai's position as a global hub for e-commerce operations and provide a value-added logistics experience, which in turn, can drive the growth of both parties,” he said.

Al Zarooni continued: “Dubai CommerCity is considered to be a pioneering and influential leading city in solidifying e-commerce in the UAE and the region, which adopts a non-traditional approach to formulating and offering complementary services directly related to the development of its business which will be announced in the near future.”

“We are optimistic with the pivotal and dynamic role played by Emirates SkyCargo in Dubai CommerCity,” he added.

Emirates SkyCargo offers cargo capacity on both passenger and freighter aircraft across its global network of over 155 destinations across six continents.

The air cargo carrier operates a modern, all wide-body fleet of over 260 aircraft including 14 freighters- 13 Boeing 777-Fs and one B747-400ERF- from its hub in Dubai. This unique combination of a strategically located hub along with Emirates SkyCargo’s network, frequency and cargo capacity allows it to create a number of product offerings for e-commerce businesses.

Dubai CommerCity is a joint venture between Dafza and wasl Asset Management Group. Launched in October 2017, Dubai CommerCity aims to strategically promote Dubai’s position as a focal point for international e-commerce and retail.

Emirates SkyCargo has developed a number of transportation solutions targeted at specific industry verticals including Emirates Pharma for the transportation of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals; Emirates Fresh for the transportation of perishables such as fruits and vegetables, fresh fish and meat and Emirates Wheels for the transportation of high value automobiles, it stated. – TradeArabia News Service
