Acwa-led consortium wins Oman solar project

MUSCAT, March 18, 2019

A consortium led by Saudi-based Acwa Power has won the licence to build Oman's first utility-scale solar photovoltaic independent power project (IPP).

The $400-million project will be built at Ibri in Dhahirah Governorate, said a report.

The announcement was made by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), the sole procurer of new power and water capacity under the Sector Law, added the Oman Daily Observer report.

The winning consortium comprises Acwa Power and Kuwait-based Gulf Investment Corporation and Alternative Energy Projects Company.

Salim Al Aufi, under-secretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas, said the award of the Ibri II solar project marked the start of an ambitious renewable energy development programme that promises to yield benefits for current and future generations.

He noted that it was also a demonstration of Oman’s vision to diversify its energy resources.
