APM Terminals Bahrain celebrates Global Safety Day

MANAMA, May 12, 2019

APM Terminals Bahrain, the exclusive operator of Bahrain's Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP), recently marked the Global Safety Day, highlighting this year’s theme - “Safety Differently - Learning from the way we work”.

This year’s safety day was about listening to and learning from the company’s workforce when it comes to safety. The main focus was on learning teams, which is another methodology to understand the port employees work processes and allows for a sense of ownership in the solutions which will make the improvements more effective overall, said a statement.

All the activities planned focused on understanding the points for improvement in the work process, identifying and mitigating the risks at Khalifa Bin Salman Port, and taking appropriate safety measures to reduce the risk to the bare minimum to ensure a comprehensive safety culture for all port users – employees, customers, government officials, contractors and all others using the terminal, it said.

Leading up to Global Safety Day, safety posters were posted across the facility reminding everyone of the theme.

APM Terminals Bahrain also had the pleasure of hosting various guests who participated in the day’s programmes, including officials from the Port and Maritime Affairs & Sea Port Policy, it added.

Later, the exercises and demonstrations were carried out throughout the day, starting with a Life Raft Demonstration (Emergency Awareness At Sea) followed by the Lashing and Unlashing Awareness session which was led by APM Terminals Employees from various departments.

Finally, the Safety and Security Departments held a Safety and Emergency Response Competition which was elaborated for both APM Terminals Bahrain employees and contractors.

MMETCo (a port contractor providing stevedoring services), presented educational safety plays which mainly revolved around the global theme. They demonstrated labour injury incidents which included topics such as GC vessel operation while loading steel billets and summer heat incidents which may cause the labour muscle cramp while operating.

APM Terminals Bahrain chief executive officer Susan Hunter recently addressed the employees and contracted staff on the value and importance of safety, talking at length about the true meaning of this year’s theme, and never to take for granted that safety is a living value, not a priority, and how it is everyone’s responsible to keep the terminal a safe place. – TradeArabia News Service
