MEA power industry tenders down 16pc in September

The power industry tenders activity across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region witnessed a slowdown in September with just 122 tenders announced, thus marking a 16 per cent decline over the 12-month average of 145, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Looking at tenders by country, Oman led the activity last month with 34 tenders and a share of 27.9% in the MEA region, stated the report.

This was up 20.6% over the previous month and 113% when compared with the last 12 month-average, it added.

South Africa came second in the list with 32 tenders and a share of 26.2% followed by Nigeria with seven tenders and a share of 5.7% during the month, said the report by GlobalData.

According to GlobalData experts, thermal was the top technology area for tenders in September,  accounting for the largest proportion with 17 tenders and a 60.7% share, followed by solar with nine tenders and a 32.1% share and hydro with one tender and a 3.6% share.

Segment wise, Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Poject was the most popular with 57 tenders, followed by T&D Equipment (36) and Generation Equipment (17).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:
*Supply & Erection: 48 tenders and a 39.3% share
*Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 44 tenders and a 36.1% share
*Project Implementation: 29 tenders and a 23.8% share
*Consulting & Similar Services: one tender and a 0.8% share.
*Power tenders in September 2019: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved in MEA were:
*Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe: 286.7MW from one tender
*Public Establishment for Electricity Generation and Transmission (Syria): 171MW from four tenders
*NamPower (Namibia): 20MW capacity from one tender.

According to GlobalData, when looking at the last 12-month average, South Africa held the top spot with 50 tenders, followed by Oman with 16 and Saudi Arabia with seven tenders.-TradeArabia News Service
