19-year-old shoots 17 dead at US high school

WASHINGTON, February 15, 2018

A 19-year-old man opened fire with an assault-style rifle at a high school in Parkland in the US state of Florida, killing 17 students and injuring more than a dozen before the police arrested him, media reports said.

The suspected gunman, identified as Nikolas Cruz, was also wounded but was released from the hospital and was in custody, an NBC News report said, quoting authorities.

Cruz was believed to have been armed with an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle and multiple magazines, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel was quoted as saying.

The gunfire began outside the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and continued inside, where 12 of the victims were killed, Israel said.

Cruz was taken into custody off campus about an hour after he "committed this horrific, detestable act," said Israel , noting investigators were reviewing social media postings that he described as "very disturbing."

While students filed out of the school with their hands up, heavily armed SWAT team members conducted a class-by-class search to make sure there were "no other shooters" — and to retrieve any bodies, said Broward County schools superintendent Robert Runcie.

The first sign that something awful was happening came around 2:30pm, not long before classes were supposed to have been dismissed, when authorities were called to respond to an active shooter.

For more than an hour, the school was at the mercy of a gunman on the loose. "He was outside and inside the school," Israel said.

"You come to the conclusion this is just absolutely pure evil," Florida Governor Rick Scott said.
