Taliban announces interim govt for Afghanistan

KABUL, September 7, 2021

The Taliban has announced a new caretaker government for Afghanistan on Tuesday, with Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund as interim prime minister and Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a co-founder of the militant group, as his deputy.

Mullah Yaqoob, a deputy leader of the Taliban, will be the caretaker defence minister.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, head of the Haqqani network, a US-designated terror group, has been appointed acting Interior Minister. Haqqani has a $5 million US bounty on his head, said a CNN report.

The Taliban took control of most of the country more than three weeks ago. The announcement of the acting cabinet is a key step in the formation of a Taliban government and presents the first picture of how their leadership of the country will begin to take shape.

In other appointments, Amir Khan Muttaqi has been named acting foreign minister, and Mullah Abdul Salam Hanafi as a second deputy.
