Batelco to charge mobile enquiries

Manama , September 20, 2007

Batelco's Directory Enquiry (DQ) numbers (181 and 188) will become chargeable for mobile callers from September 24.

The change has been approved by the Telecom regulatory Auttority (TRA), Batelco said.

All calls made from mobile handsets to Batelco's DQ will receive an SMS detailing the requested number. Calls and included message will be charged at a rate of 160 fils, of which 10 fils will be donated to charity, said a Batelco official.

However, Batelco has stressed that any calls made to DQ numbers from residential, public pay phones and business fixed line phones will remain free.

'As Bahrain is now a regulated telecommunications zone, Batelco has submitted the DQ charging proposal/request to TRA and received their approval to proceed,' Batelco Corporate Affairs general manager Ahmed Al Janahi explained.

Batelco's free online directory is available at www.bah-directory.com.bh and hard copies of Batelco Telephone Directory are distributed free of charge to households and businesses throughout the Kingdom annually, he said.

'Any customer who is registered with Batelco as being sight-impaired will be given 10 free DQ calls per billing cycle,' he noted.

At an initial stage and in order to give everyone plenty of time to become familiar with the new charge, a pre-recorded message will also be placed to remind mobile phone users that their call to 181 or 188 will be charged. Trade Arabia News Service
