Key GCC postal, telecom conference set

Doha, May 25, 2008

The 17th GCC Meeting of the Ministerial Committee for Post and Communications and Information Technology is taking place on Wednesday (May 28) in Doha, hosted by the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR) .

The GCC ministers will meet at the Four Seasons and sanction the recommendations of the 19th Meeting of the Executive Committee for Post and Communications and Information Technology, Gulf Times report said.

The Ministerial Committee will discuss several topics relating to the telecommunication sector in the GCC, including developing human resources, tariffs and mobile roaming fees and co-ordination of frequencies to avoid interferences.

With the planned formation of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) as a GCC-wide technology, the Ministerial Committee will also focus on the steps taken to develop this initiative that will give network operators flexibility to divert and route traffic around link failures, congestion, and bottlenecks.

The meeting is also an opportunity for the GCC ministers to discuss improvements to GCC’s postal system such as the establishment of a high speed postal company among GCC countries and the recent launch of Gulf Express – a new postal company servicing the GCC.
