New corporate spy group hits UAE firms

DUBAI, July 9, 2015

A new corporate espionage group that has compromised a string of major corporations in recent years, including three organisations located or headquartered in the UAE, has been uncovered by IT security firm Symantec.

The group operates at a much higher level than the average cybercrime gang – its members are technically proficient, well-resourced and financially motivated, Symantec said in a statement.

Morpho is a highly sophisticated cybercrime group that has successfully attacked a string of major corporations over the past few years, including major technology companies such as Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, and Twitter as well as banking, pharmaceutical, law firms, internet companies.

Morpho has developed their own malware tools, appear to have had access to some zero day vulnerabilities, and have a high level of operation security.

Symantec believes Morpho is a private group (not state-sponsored), but operating on a significantly higher level than most cybercrime groups.  They are focused on stealing high-level, sensitive corporative information.  They are not interested in stealing credit cards or banking credentials.

Attacks seen against targets headquartered or located mainly in the US, Canada and Europe including countries such as the UAE, UK, France, Finland and Egypt. – TradeArabia News Service
