Bahrain has urged the international community to join hands to confront the urgent challenges threatening the world.
"This is a task we must undertake together for when future generations come to review our actions, and hold us to account, history will never forgive our mistakes and miscalculations," Bahrain foreign minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa told the UN General Assembly.
The issues of energy, the environment, natural disasters, food shortages, education and the financial crisis have shaken the world today, he pointed out.
"This unsatisfactory situation leads us to suggest the establishment of a truly global energy organisation."
He said this would bring a joint international perspective to determining the role and usage of hydrocarbon energy, nuclear power, and new and renewable sources.
It would also provide the world with the objective advice that may be required on an optimal mix that is both safe and environmentally sound, the Foreign Minister stressed.
Shaikh Khalid said future agreements on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes must be made within a strengthened non-proliferation regime, with improved safeguards.
In this context, he highlighted the need for a peaceful resolution of the Iran nuclear crisis.
The solution to the food crisis, which has increased the number of hungry people in the world, lies in working together to implement ideas, such as sustainable biofuel production, changing eating habits and investing in sustainable agricultural methods, the Foreign Minister said.
He also outlined the progress achieved by Bahrain under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad, particularly in economy and education sectors.-TradeArabia News Service
