US yet to decide on envoy to Syria

New York, March 7, 2009

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said on Saturday Washington had not taken a decision yet on whether to send a US ambasssador back to Syria.

US president Barack Obama has been reviewing US policy toward Syria, including whether to return an ambassador to Damascus, a move the former Bush administration had been considering in the final months in office.

Clinton, in Ankara for a brief meeting, also told a news conference the Israeli-Syria track 'cannot be overstated'.

Turkey has mediated indirect talks between Israel and Syria, and Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said Turkey was ready to relaunch the talks if the request came from both sides. Clinton said Obama will visit Nato-member Turkey next month.-Reuters
