Sisi promoted, likely to run for president

Cairo, January 27, 2014

Egyptian army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been promoted to the rank of field marshal, the presidency said on Monday, fuelling speculation he is about to retire from the military and run for president.

Sisi, who toppled Islamist president Mohamed Mursi last year, is widely expected to contest the election due within six months.

Officials in the military and presidency were not immediately available for comment. In order for Sisi to contest the election he has to resign from his post as defence minister and from the military. – Reuters
