Dubai Airports unveils new art exhibition

DUBAI, December 4, 2017

Dubai Airports, in collaboration with Mawaheb from Beautiful People – a local art studio for the ‘determined ones’, opened an art gallery at Dubai International’s Concourse D on November 29.

The opening of the exhibition was timed to coincide with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is observed globally on December 3.

The unique exhibition, which includes five sculptures and 20 paintings from the abstract collection of the art studio, will be on display at the central atrium of Concourse D for a period of two weeks. It is DXB’s first official art gallery under Dubai Airports’ artDXB initiative, which seeks to showcase local and international art to the millions of passengers who travel through the airport every month.

“We are very proud to be associated with Mawaheb from Beautiful People, and work with them to bring much needed attention to the capabilities of the determined ones. Our artDXB initiative will provide them a unique platform that showcases their full potential to what is arguably the world’s most multicultural and cosmopolitan audience – the millions of passengers that pass through Dubai International,” said Anita Mehra, senior vice president, Communication and Reputation at Dubai Airports.

Wemmy de Maaker, managing director of Mawaheb from Beautiful People, said: "For the artworks of this exhibition, the artists at Mawaheb were inspired by the women of Abstract Expressionism. Artists like Lee Kasner, Elaine de Kooing, Alma Thomas and Perle Fine were ignored and overlooked by the art world. They had to fight for social change and acceptance and that is true of our artists too. They have also always not been given the recognition they deserve. They also want to be accepted by the world for just the way they are.”

The art exhibition is the second event held jointly by Dubai Airports and Mawaheb from Beautiful People, since the two organisations came together at the launch of the artDXB initiative in May earlier this year. As part of the collaboration, Dubai Airports will display works of art created by Mawaheb’s artists at DXB, bringing well-deserved recognition and acknowledgement for their creative works, while also raising awareness about the importance of providing opportunities to help the determined ones live fuller, more inclusive lives.

The highlight of the opening was the live demonstration of the technique used by one of the artists, Sharan Anil, to paint his abstracts using a remote-controlled toy car. - TradeArabia News Service
