The Saudi Cup to showcase elegant new dress code

RIYADH, February 16, 2021

The equine jewel in Saudi Arabia’s crown, The Saudi Cup 2021 is not only ready to showcase the very best of world-class horseracing, but all eyes will also be on the fashion stakes of the invited guests.

The two-day international event (February 19 and 20) will provide a unique setting for a limited number of guests to celebrate the kingdom’s rich Saudi fashion heritage, following a collaboration between the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Culture’s Fashion Commission.

Due to the global pandemic, The Saudi Cup 2021 is being held behind closed doors at King Abdulaziz Racecourse. Under the direction of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, an elegant new dress code has been introduced, encouraging those invited to celebrate the rich identity of Saudi Arabian culture by wearing their finest clothes inspired by traditional costumes that are worn by men and women across the kingdom.

The dress code complements other major international horseracing festivals and embraces the excitement of dressing up for a day at the races and, like Royal Ascot, King Abdulaziz Racecourse will have its very own ‘Royal Enclosure’, the statement said.

Princess Noura bint Faisal Al Saud, of the Fashion Commission at the Ministry of Culture, commented: "Saudi Arabia’s fashion heritage is rich and colourful. The Fashion Commission is pleased to have produced the dress code for The Saudi Cup 2021 as a wonderful platform to showcase Saudi heritage.

“Our hope is that this work will inspire a contemporary generation to look to the past and, by understanding and referencing it, they will create clothes that embrace Saudi’s heritage and build a narrative for its future.”

Bringing further clarity and context to the dress code, the Ministry of Culture enlisted the help of professional illustrator, Norah Sahman – who has long been inspired by Saudi heritage fashion – to create the beautiful illustrations for the Fashion Commission’s dress code for The Saudi Cup 2021, which give guests guidance on what they should wear to the event.

Sahman said: “Through art, I have connected with my Saudi culture and found a way to celebrate my heritage. It was an honour to work with the Fashion Commission at the Ministry of Culture to bring this project to life."
