Abu Dhabi to host global bowling events
Abu Dhabi, August 22, 2012
Abu Dhabi will host the 2014 World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) World Men's Championship and the 2015 WTBA World Women's Championship.
According to hosts Zayed Sports City, the combined championships are expected to bring in approximately 2,000 guests and athletes, who will book between 5,600 and 7,000 combined hotel room nights for the two, week-long flagship events.
In addition to the world championship competitions, the WTBA Executive Board will meet in Abu Dhabi in both 2014 and 2015 with the WTBA and Federation Internationale des Quilleurs, the world governing body of nine-pin and ten-pin bowling, each having a congress in the city in 2015, representing a further 300 VIP guests.
Both events will take place in the August and September off-peak months, providing a strong boost to the overall yearly hotel guest number targets - which are expected to reach 2.8 million in 2014 and 3.2 million in 2015 - being pursued by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority.
The events are also expected to energise local stakeholders, with more than half of the projected inbound guests being family and friends of competitors who will be looking to explore the emirate and its many attractions and offerings.
“Abu Dhabi has a lot for competitors, supporters and fans to do whilst not at the venue, and that was important to the WTBA when selecting a bid,” said Barry Bremner, executive member of Local Organising Committee Abu Dhabi.
“We also know we have the support of stakeholders who will work very hard to make all visitors’ stays ones to remember. In addition, Abu Dhabi is easily accessible and most airlines fly to and from the emirate while the UAE’s national carrier, Etihad Airways, has increasing airlinks and in-roads to more than 230 destinations directly and indirectly."
“Having hosted this event back in 1999, we are keen to show the bowling fraternity how much Abu Dhabi has changed, whilst assuring them the warm Arabian hospitality that was such a hit last time is as prevalent as ever,” he added.
The 40-lane Khalifa International Bowling Centre at Zayed Sports City is one of the sport’s foremost facilities in the Middle East.
With 1,000 retractable seats, the centre is fully capable of hosting premier events and local competitions, a statement said.
