Dubai to host key space risk forum

Dubai, May 10, 2014

Leading players in the Global Space industry will return to Dubai for 'The World Space Risk Forum 2014' which runs from May 13 to 15.

Hosted at Raffles Dubai, this globally established bi-annual event, which focuses on space risk management and space insurance, brings together leading professionals representing all aspects of the space industry.

Attendees will include CEOs and CFOs of satellite manufacturers, satellite operators and launch service providers, in addition to all the major global insurance brokers and underwriter companies, said the organisers.

Delegates will be encouraged to attend panelist sessions and participate in workshops where the three key topics for the World Space Risk Forum 2014 - “New Capital. New Threats. New Markets” will be debated and discussed as follows:

The first keynote of the week will be given by Romain Bausch. He was the president and chief executive officer of SES from 1995 until April 3, 2014, following a career in the Luxembourg civil service (Ministry of Finance)

The Plenary session on “Where the capital comes from” will be moderated by Jan Schmidt of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions.

The first discussion session will discuss how capital is raised for the space industry and the issues that arise.

The challenges that major space projects face are numerous – navigating the political, legal and regulatory framework, selecting the appropriate manufacturer, technology and hardware, securing launch services; the list goes on, according to the organisers.

One intangible yet essential input that is in increasingly limited supply and yet is required in even greater quantities is money, it added.

The key note speech will be delivered by Dr Kurt Karl, the head of Economic Research and Consulting at Swiss Re. Dr Karl also has responsibility for supervising Swiss Re’s sigma papers, the award-winning research series on the insurance industry, said the organisers.

The Plenary session on  “Reliability in an era of change” will be moderated by Willy Chow of Asia Broadcast Satellite.

This session will look at the increase in reliability in the space industry and the effect this is having on the industry and those working within it, they added.

The session on “Growing up in Space” will be moderated by David Wade of Atrium Space Insurance Consortium.

The three panelists of the “Growing Up In Space” Focus Group will provide a series of unique insights telling the story of each company’s successful entry into the commercial space market, said the event organisers.

The advantages and disadvantages of each company’s approach and lessons learned will be highlighted along with a discussion of how such companies will continue to remain competitive in the increasingly crowded commercial space sector, they added.

Chris Kunstadter of XL Insurance and chairman of the World Space Risk Forum 2014, said this unique forum will discuss risk issues of importance to the companies, exchange ideas and develop risk management and space insurance solutions of mutual interest.

“Space has become an integral part of the lives of everyone on Earth and the industry has continued to innovate and develop solutions that make space a safer place to reach, to do business, to visit and to explore. We look forward to welcoming attendees to join the conversation in Dubai, and help develop the strategies that will transform the world,” he added.

Yousuf Al Shaibani, the director general of EIAST and local strategic partner for the forum said: "This is undoubtedly one of the biggest events on the aerospace calendar and one which offers an ideal platform for EIAST to showcase the strategic and technical specifications of DubaiSat-2 as well as our efforts in raising the bar on technical excellence and comprehensive scientific development in the UAE."-TradeArabia News Service
