Shadowland gears up for debut UAE show
Abu Dhabi, June 25, 2014
The world-famous Pilobolus dance company, the name behind the ground-breaking Shadowland show, which will debut in the UAE this August as part of Abu Dhabi Summer Season, will feature a finale specifically designed as a tribute to the country.
The award-winning Shadowland, excerpts of which have been performed on the Oprah show, at the Academy Awards and on the BBC, is a mix of theatre, dance, circus and concert.
The first show of its kind to combine shadow theatre with dance, Shadowland will have its UAE public debut at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on August 8 for the start of a run of 12 performances until August 16.
“In addition to adjusting our show out of respect for local cultural differences, Pilobolus has created a special finale for the show in honour of our UAE audience, which we leave as a surprise for those who attend,” explained Michael Tracy, the artistic director of Pilobolus.
Created in collaboration with lead writer for the popular animated series SpongeBob SquarePants Steven Banks, the story of Shadowland is a surreal experience of a young girl’s sensational world as she comes of age. The show is set to a rhythmic original score, which ranges from ballads to hard-driving rock, composed, by popular American musician, producer, and film composer David Poe.
“This is the original shadow theatre which has wowed almost half a million international theatre-goers and Abu Dhabi audiences can expect a colourful, big, entertaining and completely wacky evening,” remarked Sia.S.Far, the CFO and managing partner, Alchemy Project-Entertainment, which is organising the show on behalf of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi).
The tickets for Shadowland show, which start from Dh150 ($41) are now available at www.TIXBOX.com.
And apart from the UAE finale, audiences can look forward to a performance like no other, stated Tracy.
“Shadowland is unlike any show you’ve ever seen and full of fantastic and surprising effects throughout,” said the artistic director. “One highlight in particular to look out for is the magical live transformation of the heroine into a strange chimerical character – half girl and half dog – whose ensuing adventures comprise the story of the show,” he added.
To date, Shadowland, the 90-minute show, has been performed in 64 countries with a cast of nine dancers whose performance two years ago took Germany’s highly coveted ‘Lea’ live entertainment award.
Despite their worldly experience, the cast say they’re eagerly anticipating the Abu Dhabi shows.
“While Pilobolus has travelled the world performing for over 40 years, this is the first time this cast will perform in the UAE and we are particularly looking forward to meeting new people, eating good food and learning about the local culture while we’re there,” added Tracy.-TradeArabia News Service
