New app to file police grievances in Bahrain

MANAMA, June 28, 2015

People in Bahrain will soon be able to lodge official complaints against the police using their smartphones, a report said.

A new mobile application for Apple and Android devices is being launched by the Ombudsman Office in a bid to help citizens and residents easily register their grievances, reported the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

It will be launched in the coming months and will register complaints such as police misconduct, human rights violations and other allegations.

“We are expanding our complaint management system by introducing this new app that can be easily downloaded on mobile phones and other devices,” said Ombudsman Office secretary general Nawaf Al Ma’awada.

“Once the app is downloaded, the user can type in the complaint details that will be registered and later investigated by us.

“All complaints registered with us are taken seriously and there is a system in place that allows us to track down cases, including those referred to other bodies.”

Al Ma’awada said the app was developed to make it easier for people to communicate with the Ombudsman instead of having to physically visit its Seef headquarters.

“Once the complaint is registered, our team of investigators will contact the person for additional details,” he said.

Teams of investigators regularly visit the country’s main police stations to open complaint boxes, set up by the Ombudsman, to encourage people to report any violations.

“We have the keys to open the complaint boxes and the plan is to also place such boxes in rehabilitation and detention centres,” added Al Ma’awda.

To file a complaint, visit www.ombudsman.bh or send an e-mail to complaints@ombudsman.bh.

People can also visit the Ombudsman’s headquarters in Seef District or call 1330 8888, from 7.30am to 2.15pm.

The GDN earlier reported on the Ombudsman’s second annual report that registered 908 cases, including 319 complaints lodged by citizens, residents and institutions in the last 11 months.

Investigators referred 54 complaints to the Special Investigation Unit, 45 cases to the military court and three to the Public Prosecution.

Seventy-one of those cases are still being investigated, 10 are in court and convictions have been issued in seven cases.

The office also investigated deaths of 11 prisoners, including an inmate who was murdered in Jaw Prison. – TradeArabia News Service
