Expo 2020 country pavilions work to start in April

DUBAI, January 16, 2018

Work on some of the country pavilions for the mega Expo 2020 Dubai event is expected to begin in April this year, said a report.

More than 180 countries are taking part in the expo, which will run for six months from October 20 to April 10, 2021 drawing over 25 million visitors, around 150,000 daily, reported state news agency Wam, citing the organisers.

The Expo’s infrastructure, the cornerstone of the UAE pavilion, will be built while construction work continues in Al Wasl Square, stated Najeeb Al Ali, the executive director of the Expo 2020 Dubai Office.

The future use of the site and its sustainable heritage is an important part of its design and construction, he noted.

According to him, the site will be transformed into a sustainable project and business-friendly environment at the end of the Expo, and 80 per cent of its internal infrastructure, built on a area of 4.39 sq km, will continue to be used after the event to host various initiatives and projects, including a free zone, commercial centres and a residential complex.

Al Ali said a detailed study was being conducted to help determine how to use the site.

With regards to the remaining 20 per cent, the official said agreements were signed with participating countries that detail the dismantling of their pavilions at the end of the Expo, to be returned to their countries to promote sustainability.

He added that Expo 2020 Dubai aims to support national energy consumption plans, to ensure that 50 per cent of the country’s total energy consumption is made up of renewable energy, he added.
