Borealis, Borouge sponsor water award

Abu Dhabi, August 22, 2007

Borealis and its Middle East joint venture partner Borouge have taken on co-sponsorship of the Stockholm Water Prize.

The award was presented by the King of Sweden in the Stockholm City Hall recently during World Water Week.

This year’s prize laureate, Professor Perry L. McCarty, from Stanford University in the United States, was rewarded for his groundbreaking work in developing a scientific approach for the design and operation of water and wastewater systems.

He has defined the field of environmental biotechnology, which forms the basis for small and large-scale pollution control and safe drinking water systems.

Borealis and Borouge’s co-sponsorship of the renowned Stockholm Water Prize rewards and supports world-class best practices and scientific progress to address water and sanitation challenges.

“We are proud to co-sponsor this prestigious award, and our congratulations go to Mr McCarty for his innovative work,” comments Borealis CEO John Taylor. “For billions of people around the globe, access to safe water and sanitation is the most vital issue. We are continuously leveraging our expertise and market leadership to deliver sustainable solutions to global challenges.”

“Together with Borealis, Borouge is committed to addressing this major issue,” says Borouge Pte CEO Harald Hammer. “We are committed to providing innovative solutions through our products for sustainable development in the local communities. Our stewardship in pipe systems and reliable networks will help establish greater education and partnerships throughout the value chain in all parts of the world.”

First presented in 1991, the Stockholm Water Prize is an international award presented yearly to an individual, organisation or institution for outstanding water-related activities in the fields of aid, awareness building and education, technology, management or science.

The award includes a $150,000 award and a crystal sculpture. The prize laureate is announced each March on UN World Water Day and honoured each August at a Royal Prize Ceremony and Banquet in the Stockholm City Hall during the World Water Week in Stockholm. The prize was founded by Swedish and international companies in co-operation with the City of Stockholm. – TradeArabia News Service
