Qatar to bid for 2016 Olympic Games

Doha, October 3, 2007

Qatar has officially entered the fray to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Deputy Amir Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will formally launch Doha's bid at a celebratory event on October 25 when a new logo and tagline will be revealed. A new bid website will also be launched on the occasion, said a report in the Gulf Times.

'The Doha 2016 bid is an extremely serious bid. We are absolutely ready to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016,' said bid committee chairman Hassan Ali bin Ali.

'I am delighted the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have approved our bid logo. We are extremely proud of this design which was created by local students of the Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar (VCUQ),' he added.

Doha, Rio De Janerio, Chicago, Baku, Prague, Tokyo and Madrid are the seven cities bidding for the 2016 sporting showpiece, with Qatar's capital the only candidate from the Arab world.

The winning city will be announced in Copenhagen on October 2, 2009.
