Firms back EnviroFone campaign

Dubai:, November 25, 2007

Private and public sector companies across the UAE are supporting campaign to collect old and unused mobile phones for recycling.

EnviroFone, the Dubai-based company driving the initiative, has been inundated with calls from businesses, government offices and education facilities offering support. Many are now having EnviroFone drop boxes installed to encourage staff to hand in unwanted handsets, the organisers said in a statement.

EnviroFone was launched in June under the patronage of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Environment & Water, telecommunications companies Etisalat and du, and the charity Gulf For Good.

Drop boxes are located at retail outlets and petrol stations throughout the UAE, but now also stand in a number of leading business offices including the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Dubai Duty Free, the Arabian Radio Network, Dubai Women’s College, ADNOC Offshore, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Oman Insurance, Fujitsu Siemens and Higher Colleges of Technology in Fujairah.

“We have been overwhelmed with the support the EnviroFone campaign has received from both local and international companies,” said EnviroFone Managing Director Stuart Fleming.  “There is no way we could have been as successful as we have been – collecting more than 100,000 phones – without the support of these businesses.”

“We have recently launched the EnviroFone Schools Project which is supported by even more companies – Emirates Foundation, the KHDA, AW Rostamani, and HP.  Not only have the UAE public stepped up to the EnviroFone call but so too have public and private businesses.”

The campaign aims to prevent thousands of unwanted mobile phones being dumped carelessly, thereby preventing leakage of toxins which can seriously damage the environment and pollute water supplies.

For every phone collected – and the target for 2007 is 250,000 – Dh5 will be donated to Gulf for Good, the UAE-based charity that organises adventure challenges to raise funds for carefully selected needy causes.

EnviroFone drop boxes are located at ENOC petrol stations in Dubai, all ADNOC petrol stations in Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates, Etisalat and du business centres, Spinneys supermarkets, Magrudy’s Book Stores, Lamcy Plaza in Dubai, Mall of the Emirates, Deira City Centre, Sharjah City Centre, Ajman City Centre and FedEx locations in the UAE. - TradeArabia News Service
