UAE to combat commercial dumping

Dubai, April 8, 2008

The UAE Minister of Economy Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri has asserted the importance of the law to combat commercial dumping in the GCC countries, and its impact on the industrial sector in the UAE.

Al Mansouri highlighted UAE’s stand on the issue at a meeting to receive director general of the GCC Technical Secretariat of Anti Dumping Rihan Moubarak Fayez. The meeting was attended by managing director for Industrial Affairs at the Ministry of Economy Jamal Nasser Lootah and director of Industrial Development at the Ministry Saeed Abdullah AL Roken.

During the meeting, Moubarak provided a full presentation on the secretariat’s role, strategy and objectives. He also presented some suggestions to further develop the performance, authority and independence of the secretariat.

“Enforcing the law to combat commercial dumping in the GCC requires huge efforts from all the GCC countries. The law plays an important role in protecting the industrial sector, and is one of the most pertinent ways to protect Gulf industries,” said Mansouri.

Lootah said that the ministry has established a specialised administration unit to oversee dumping issues, and will co-ordinate with the secretariat to promote anti-dumping measures. He added that intensive workshops would be held for investors to teach them how to protect the industries from a dumping attack.

The Law to Combat Commercial Dumping was issued in January 2004 by a decree of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. The secretary general of the Council has issued another decree to establish the GCC Technical Secretariat of Anti Dumping. – TradeArabia News Service
