Manama, June 19, 2008

The revenues of Bahrain Exhibitions and Conventions Authority (Beca) last year soared to BD15.5 million ($41 million). The overall exhibiting delegates also increased to around 11,000, it was revealed.

The figures were released as Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro chaired Beca board meeting.

The Beca revenues are expected to reach BD25.77 this year and BD34.14 next year.

Meanwhile, Bahrain Intern-ational Exhibition Centre (BIEC) has reported a rate of reservations exceeding 100 per cent for the coming three years.

The BIEC is scheduled to host the meeting of the International Ophthalmology Society in March next year.

The event is already hailed as the one of the largest international conference and exhibitions as more than 4,000 delegations are expected to attend.

Another major medical conference entitled "Backstage Events France" is also scheduled for June next year with more than 2,000 participants expected to attend.

Australian ABM Company will also hold a three-day major conference and exhibition at BIEC in 2010.

The Beca is finalising the "Bahrain Exhibition City", due to be constructed in Sakhir.

Bahrain Mumtalakat Company will be leading a consortium of banks and business to set up the project.

The state-of-the-art facility is expected to cover more than 500,000 sq m and feature recreational venues and luxurious hotels.

The complex is expected to cost between BD150 million and BD200 million and provide up to 150,000sq/m of expo spaces.

"The tangible surge in exhibitions and conferences industry reflects the overall economic boom," the minister said.

He stressed the vital role of exhibitions and conferences in promoting the economy and boosting investments.

He also gave instructions to implement a strategy aimed at boosting Beca resources and the standard of its performance.-TradeArabia News Service
