Show focuses on contemporary art
Dubai, July 31, 2008
Arts Oasis, a signature event of the DSS 2008 opened on July 30 featuring works by artists from 30 countries.
The event, which runs up until August 6, was inaugurated by Dr Lamees Hamdan Al Shamsi, board member, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (DCAA), at Wafi, a key sponsor of the summer extravaganza.
She was accompanied by Dr Salah Al Kassim, advisor at DCAA; Saeed Nabouda, project manager at DCAA; Laila Suhail, chief executive officer of the Dubai Shopping Festival office, and Yousif Mubarak, chief operating officer of DSF office.
Dr Lamees said: ’The presence of multi-national participants at the Arts Oasis sends out a clear message to the world that Dubai is an Oasis for everyone.’
Laila Suhail said: ’In its third year, Arts Oasis has grown in stature to be included as a DSS Signature Event in 2008. By featuring artists from countries in the East and West, Arts Oasis is an event with a difference where ideas are shared and a platform for cultural exchange is created.’
Initiated in the summer of 2006, Arts Oasis has enjoyed overwhelming popularity since its inception and is today regarded as a platform for artists locally and regionally to reach out to a wider audience.
Works displayed in the Arts Oasis this year will be based on ‘Emerging Contemporary Art in Dubai’, with Wafi visitors having a unique experience of interacting with the participating artists themselves. The ‘Eye of Horus’ area in the mall will host a gallery of art forms such as paintings, prints, installations and sculptures, and other new media art by the artists.
During DSS 2007, up to 17 artists from Lebanon, United Kingdom, Sudan, South Africa, Iraq, New Zealand, India, Germany, Portugal, and UAE lent a truly diverse artistic colour to the event.
The increase in the number of participants this year is testament to the popularity of the event for artists in Dubai. - TradeArabia News Service
