New milestone in Bahraini-German ties

His Majesty King Hamad on Tuesday met German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel in Berlin and discussed bilateral co-operation, developments in the Middle East, peace and stability efforts and issues of mutual interest.

The two leaders praised Bahraini-German ties, hoping that the King's visit would open up new opportunities for co-operation, partnership and fruitful dialogue, said a report in our sister publication, the Gulf Daily News.

His Majesty underlined opportunities available to the private sector and businessmen in both countries to set up joint projects.

The two leaders reviewed economic developments and the effects of the financial crisis on the Middle East and Europe.

On the peace process, His Majesty underlined the importance of the German role in finding a fair and comprehensive solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict as well as other Arab, regional and international issues.

The German Chancellor thanked His Majesty for his continuous efforts to bring about progress in relations between the countries and his endeavours to achieve peace and stability in the region.

A luncheon was then held in honour of His Majesty and his delegation.

His Majesty and the Chancellor then held a Press conference focusing on relations between the two countries.

On peace and security, Dr Merkel said the two countries had similar views on finding means to achieve stability in the world.

She said there was mutual understanding between the Gulf and European sides on finance and peace issues.

His Majesty described his talks with the Chancellor as fruitful.

His Majesty said the two countries agreed on signing a memorandum on political consultation between their foreign ministries and that a security agreement was announced between their interior ministries on co-operation in a number of vital areas.

As for economic and trade co-operation, His Majesty invited German businessmen and companies to benefit from the excellent investment atmosphere in Bahrain.

Regarding major projects such as installing railways in Bahrain or Gulf states, His Majesty said this was a matter to be discussed with concerned governments.

His Majesty also invited Dr Merkel to visit Bahrain.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier lauded Bahraini-German ties and described them as strong and cordial.

He was speaking following a meeting with His Majesty in the presence of Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.

Separately, His Majesty received at his Berlin residence former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and praised his efforts to promote bilateral co-operation during his term. His Majesty also visited historic Brandenburg Gate accompanied by Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit. - TradeArabia News Service
