EMS helps cut pollution in olive oil industry

Energy Management Services (EMS), a leading provider of energy management solutions, has identified key stages in reducing and treating waste water, one of the byproducts in the manufacture of olive oil.
In an effort to inform and educate olive oil producers in the region, EMS has launched a series of seminars that will take place in major cities throughout the Middle East.
The first seminar, held in Amman, brought together leaders in the olive oil industry and highlighted major energy consumption issues, while identifying the latest conservation techniques that can be employed during the manufacturing process.
'The olive oil industry is an integral part of the Middle East economy. Unfortunately, the manufacturing process results in high levels of land and water pollution for which EMS is keen to find innovative solutions,' stated Khaled Bushnaq, chief of EMS.
'We have identified three main areas in the manufacture of olive oil that are responsible for the pollution – waste water disposition and solid waste, water consumption and electricity.'
'The region-wide seminars are designed to equip producers with the latest knowledge to help bring down the levels of energy consumption.'
The seminar examined several methods to reduce waste water pollution, including the recycling of waste water by installing advanced waste water treatment plants, converting the waste water to irrigation water using biological treatment, converting the waste water to sewer water using chemical treatment, evaporating the waste water using the available olive waste or solar system, and segregation of waste water according to pollution percentage.
