Dubai Aluminium (Dubal), one of the largest aluminium smelters in the world, has teamed up with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), a voluntary, non-government organisation, in an environmental campaign.

While joining EEG’s Can Collection Drive 2009, Dubal has also extended its involvement by engaging employees in the campaign.

Reflecting the primary aim of the Can Collection Drive 2009, Dubal’s internal campaign centred on encouraging employees to collect empty aluminium cans from home, the office, friends and relatives, even restaurants and bring them to Dubal for recycling purposes.

To make participation easy, the company placed 32 campaign-branded can collection bins in the parking areas around Dubal’s Jebel Ali site from April 15 to May 25. Over the six-week period, employees collected more than 2,830 cans (approximately 47.5 kilograms).

The attention and interest of employees was drawn by distributing electronic mailers to launch the campaign and then maintain momentum by reporting on the progress made; and placing posters at strategic locations.

In addition, campaign-specific PC wallpaper was designed and deployed across the organisation. Also, every employee received a personalised entry form for a quiz-based competition to win one of ten prizes.

Externally, a team of Dubal employees volunteered to assist EEG during the culmination of the campaign on May 28. Public awareness of aluminium can recycling and Dubal’s commitment to the cause was raised further through the dissemination of press releases to the media; and placement of an article in the company’s in-house magazine.
