Registration call for expat Bahrainis

Manama , September 29, 2010

Bahrainis living abroad can register to vote in next month's parliamentary and municipal elections from today (September 29).

Registration will be open until next Tuesday at Bahrain's 24 embassies, four consulates and two permanent missions (in New York and Geneva).

Elections chief executive officer and Public Prosecutor Nawaf Al Ma'awada said that Bahrainis living outside the kingdom should first register at their respective embassies, consulates or missions, to be able to vote.

Bahrainis abroad will vote at the embassies, consulates and missions on October 19, four days before the elections take place in Bahrain, on October 23.

This is to allow time for their votes to be included in the final count, Al Ma’awada said.

If a second round of voting is necessary, it will take place for those abroad on October 26. No date has yet been set for any possible second round in Bahrain.

Al Ma'awada said to complete the registration process Bahrainis living abroad could visit the official election website vote.bh or contact the election executive committee through the hotline on 77277277.

On November 21, 2006, 1,191 Bahrainis headed to embassies to cast their vote. The highest numbers of voters were in Jordan, Kuwait and the UAE. – TradeArabia News Service
