Bahrain clamp on absentee employees

Manama, March 28, 2011

Bahrain's ministries and government departments will clamp down on absentee public sector employees to ensure full commitment to a code of work ethics.

His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa yesterday ordered the crackdown as he chaired the weekly Cabinet meeting at Gudaibiya Palace.

He directed all ministries and government departments to strictly implement rules set by the Civil Service Bureau (CSB).

The regulations concern, particularly, a code of work ethics, commitment to work timings and performance.

The order follows absenteeism in offices following the anti-government protests in the kingdom.

The Premier gave strict directives to all ministries and government departments to submit reports on employees violating CSB rules and regulations - especially commitment to work timings and performance.

They were also instructed to co-operate with the CSB and specialised committees to take necessary measures.

"The procedures aim to avert any repetition of violations, enforce work discipline and ensure full commitment to CSB regulations," Cabinet Affairs Minister Kamal Ahmed said.

The Premier stressed the government's strenuous efforts to ensure proper services for citizens. "The government has mobilised all financial and human resources to serve citizens," he said, pointing out rules and regulations to enforce the code of work ethics.

He also described commitment of public sector employees to work timings and performance as key pillars of the code.

"The government rewards outstanding employees with behaviour and performance-related bonuses and applies disciplinary measures on underachieving workers," he said.  - TradeArabia News Service
