DP World backs Mumbai green drive

Dubai, July 17, 2011

Global marine terminal operator DP World has joined hands with local green campaigners near the Indian city of Mumbai to plant 20,000 bamboo saplings.

The tree plantation drive took place in the village of Ransai and involved the participation of representatives of DP World Nhava Sheva, the Uran district Forest Department, the Powai Rotary Club, and scores of enthusiastic villagers.

The bamboo plantation programme, called “Hari Kranti” (Green Progress), was jointly conceived by DP World Nhava Sheva management and the Forest Department to support the country’s drive to raise the forest cover from 23 per cent to 33 per cent of the land mass by 2012.

Global warming and climate change have become the focus of environmental debate as India pushes ahead with massive infrastructure development and is emerging as one of the world’s top economic power houses.

“Striking a balance between sustainable business practices and commitment to protecting the local community’s environment is at the heart of DP World’s growth strategy,” said Anil Singh, senior vice president and managing director, Subcontinent, DP World.

“We are pleased that DP World Nhava Sheva plays a proactive role in the reforestation programme launched by the Indian authorities. We congratulate all those involved in this green initiative and wish them further success.”

Capt Alpesh Sharma, chief executive officer, DP World Nhava Sheva, said: “Our core business is energy intensive, and at DP World we operate within a strict framework for responsible business practices, making sure that our operations contribute to the wellbeing of the local community in a consistent and effective manner.” – TradeArabia News Service
