Egypt govt to amend electoral law

Cairo, October 2, 2011

Egypt's military-backed government said it would amend a law for upcoming elections, the state news agency reported.

The decision comes before Sunday's deadline for changes demanded by political parties trying to counter the influence of former President Hosni Mubarak's allies.

The government did not detail what changes it would make.

The political parties want to squeeze ex-members of Mubarak's disbanded National Democratic Party, who might stand for re-election as independents, out of the electoral race which is aimed at steering the country to civilian rule.

The government, facing growing demands for swifter democratic reforms, said it would study the status of an emergency law condemned by rights activists for handing police sweeping powers of arrest and detention.

It said it would also study putting an end to military trials for civilians and set a clearer timeline for a transition to civilian rule, saying the lower house of parliament would begin its work in the second half of January, Mena said. - Reuters
