Bahrain displays solidarity with Syrians

Manama, May 28, 2012

Hundreds gathered in front of the UN House in Bahrain yesterday (May 27) in protest against the world's silence over atrocities carried out by the Syrian regime.

They denounced Saturday's massacre in Houla, Homs, which killed at least 116 civilians, including women and children. They also demanded the UN's immediate intervention to stop further bloodshed.

The demonstration, organised by Al Asala Islamic Society, was attended by community leaders and Political Coalition Group members.

Protesters chanted slogans against the Syrian regime demanding the prosecution of President Bashar Al Assad for committing genocide against his own people.

Organisers announced the launch of a new donation campaign, Crawling to Syria, which will kick off on Friday across Bahrain to collect clothes, food and other items for Syrian refugees.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the Muslim Education Society in co-ordination with Al Eslah and Islamic societies.

Al Asala Islamic Society president and MP Abdulhaleem Murad said the world was just watching as more people get killed in Syria.

"Whether it is the Arab League or the UN, no one is taking real action against the Syrian regime, as it continues to decimate our brothers there," he said.

"What is happening to the Syrians is really heartbreaking and is a result of the regime's refusal to leave power and give it to the people.

"Everyone knows that Syrians are living miserably and will start a new donation campaign on Friday in co-operation with Islamic charitable societies to help provide them with basic needs."

Prophet's Family and Followers Society president Hassan Al Hussaini questioned the international community's capabilities to end brutalities during the 14-month uprising.

"The world's silence is the reason behind more deaths and it is still unknown when it would end - will it end with the elimination of humanity in Syria?" he asked.

Meanwhile, Al Menbar Islamic Society vice-president Nasser Al Fadhala blamed Iran and other groups for the massacres in Syria, saying their support to Assad's regime was causing more deaths. "Unfortunately, the Syrian regime is being heavily backed to slaughter more innocent people. There will have to be a point where justice prevails."

The National Unity Assembly (NUA) condemned the massacre and said it holds the Syrian regime directly responsible for the killings.

It also blamed the Arab League and Arab countries for not intervening to stop the systematic killings by the Syrian regime. The NUA also condemned UN's lack of intervention and urged the world to take steps to stop the bloodshed. – TradeArabia News Service
