Qatar University launches new legal journal

Doha, June 28, 2012

Qatar University’s College of Law has launched a new bilingual legal journal which addresses themes and topics of relevance to the Gulf and Middle East.

The bi-annual e-journal International Review of Law is available on QScience.com, a peer-reviewed online forum developed by Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishers.

It focuses on issues such as corporate, commercial, constitutional and construction law and its high-level editorial board comprises key legal figures including law deans, prominent lawyers and leading legal academics. It also includes QU College of Law professors and Qatari lecturers.

College of Law dean Dr Hassan Okour said: “What makes the International Review of Law a distinguished journal is that its open-access nature provides readers with high-quality and inspiring discussions of legal concepts and perspectives in different jurisdictions.”

Issue one – now out – includes contributions from leading scholars from around the world.

The journal contains five articles; one article from each edition will be translated along with translated abstracts of the other four.

Editor-in-Chief Dr Jon Truby said: “We are very pleased to have received input from such highly distinguished legal scholars and practitioners.  Additionally, our new Qatari lecturers and law faculty have shown a great eagerness and ability to support the journal.”

QScience managing director Arend Kuster said: “The journal is open to doctrinal, context-based, reformative or comparative work, in all fields of law. Authors who want to reach an audience beyond traditional fixed locations will welcome this new open-access platform.”

Five members of QU’s College of Law, who are on the journal’s editorial board, in conjunction with citations expert Rob Hudson, College of Law librarian, are now looking for articles in Arabic and English for the second edition.

The journal’s media manager and editor Reem Al Ansari said: "Working at the law journal has been a valuable learning experience. Being able to conduct legal research and write for industry publications is essential for lawyers and legal academics."

Mona Al Marzouqi, a member on the journal’s editorial board, said:  “The journal sheds light on a number of controversial issues that impact the world at large.  It is a guide for any reader who is interested in the new legal issues that arise from time to time that call for further research and development.”

“It is of great importance for legal academics and practitioners working in Qatar to contribute to such a journal to enhance the Qatari scholarly legal literature and serve as a source for academic legal research,” she added. – TradeArabia News Service
