ISLAMIC CONFERENCE

Bahrain King underlines Muslim world unity

Makkah, August 15, 2012

Islamic states must unite for a better future for the Muslim world, His Majesty King Hamad said, stressing joint historic responsibilities and aspirations to reach understanding and bridge the divide among Muslims.

The King, who headed Bahrain's delegation to the extraordinary Islamic Solidarity Conference in Makkah, also praised Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for promoting Arab and Islamic causes.

His Majesty urged unity and co-operation between all Islamic states for a better future for the Muslim world.

"Bickering, rancour, hate-mongering and strife destroy nations, wreak havoc on peoples and cause their deterioration and loss of prestige," he said in an arrival statement.

He later took part in the opening session of the two-day summit which was chaired by King Abdullah.

The Saudi monarch proposed setting up a dialogue centre for Islamic doctrines based in Riyadh in light of escalating tensions between Sunnis and Shias in the Islamic world.

He called for "solidarity, tolerance and moderation" as well as shunning divide and fighting sedition.

The leaders also discussed a proposal to suspend war-hit Syria. Foreign ministers, who held a preparatory meeting on Monday, recommended the suspension of Syria's membership.
Sources close to the meeting said only Iran and Algeria were against the recommendation. Syria had no representation at the meeting.

A top Saudi foreign ministry official, Mohammed Ahmed Taieb, said that "some delegates" were calling for further steps against Damascus by "demanding that the current president step down and preparing for a post-Assad transition period".

The King was received on arrival at King Abdulaziz International Airport by Jeddah Governor Prince Meshal bin Majid bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, GCC Secretary-General Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani, Bahraini Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Shaikh Humood bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and embassy staff.

He expressed delight at visiting Saudi Arabia at the invitation of King Abdullah to attend the conference in Mecca, the symbol of Muslims' unity.

His Majesty stressed joint historic responsibilities and aspirations to reach understanding and compatibility of stances towards unifying the Islamic nation and bridging the divide among Muslims.

The King underscored the importance of bolstering relations and preserving fundamentals on the basis of co-operation and peace for a better future for all Muslim states and people.

He stressed the importance of the summit which brings together leaders of Islamic states to exchange opinions and views regarding the situation reigning in the Muslim world.

"The results we will reach will reflect our determination to bolster relations between our countries and promote our unity and solidarity as the Muslim world goes through a defining moment," the King said.

He described the summit and its results and objectives as the hope for all Muslim peoples who aspire for unity, decent living conditions, justice and modernisation in the fields of science, technologies, economy, sociology and management to ensure a stable, secure and prosperous future.

The leaders studied proposals to expel war-hit Syria from the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC), piling pressure on Damascus to halt its crackdown on the opposition.
Foreign ministers, who held a preparatory meeting on Monday, recommended the suspension of Syria's membership, OIC chief Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said. – TradeArabia News Service
