GCC states 'top in food waste'

Dubai, July 17, 2014

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states are among the world's top generators of food waste with the six states accounting for over 150 million tonnes of municipal waste every year, a report said.

The GCC states are expected to generate more waste during Ramadan, the report by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, was quoted as saying in a report.

The food waste in the UAE comprises 39 per cent of an average household's organic waste, but during Ramadan, as per the estimates by Dubai municipality, this ratio increases to roughly 55 per cent or 1,850 tonnes, it said.

The GCC states import most of their food requirements and rely heavily on desalination for their potable water needs.
