Bahrain issues clamp on chilled meat imports
MANAMA, January 21, 2015
Bahrain’s Directorate of Agriculture and Marine Resources has stopped issuing licences to the Bahrain Livestock Company (BLC) to import chilled meat ‘from any source.’
The measure was announced after health inspectors found a consignment of imported frozen meat unfit for human consumption, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.
The directorate said that the move follows repeated confiscation of inedible rotten chilled meat consignments.
It hailed His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa’s directives to launch an inquiry into the latest consignment which was found spoilt.
The directorate vowed to spare no effort to implement the Premier’s directives and step up control measures.
“The company imported in the last few days a shipment of rotten meat, which was detected by government vets,” the directorate said in a statement.
It said that the decision to stop issuing BLC with import licences stemmed from its keenness to protect consumers’ health, pointing out that the company failed to take the necessary measures and prevent repeated spoilt meat shipments.
The directorate assured the public that it would not allow any meat to be sold in the local market unless proven safe for human consumption. - TradeArabia News Service
