New project to increase meat self-sufficiency.

Oman plans red meat project

MUSCAT, January 29, 2015

A mega red meat project is being planned by the Omani government as part of a scheme to achieve self-sufficiency in meat production, according to a report.

The proposed company, which will be promoted by Oman Food Investment Holding, will import sheep and cows from African countries like Tanzania and Sudan, said the Times of Oman report.

It will set up slaughtering houses in both Tanzania and Oman, it said.

"Some consumers want to buy live animals, especially during Eid period. And that is why we are planning for both live animals and frozen red meat," Salim bin Saif Al Abdali, chief of follow-up and studies at Oman Food Investment Holding, was quoted as saying.

Currently, Oman produces only 20 per cent of the country's demand for red meat and the remaining 80 per cent is met by way of imports.

"We need to increase it to more than 50 per cent in the future. Our objective is to invest in projects that will ensure food security for the country," said Al Abdali.

A feasibility study for the project is yet to be conducted, he noted.

Like other dairy and poultry projects planned by OFIH, red meat project's funding will be on similar lines — 50 per cent equity capital and 50 per cent debt, the report added.
