FIRST VISIT IN 34 YEARS

Indian PM Modi to discuss energy, trade with UAE

ABU DHABI, August 15, 2015

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi on Sunday (August 16) on a two-day visit to the Gulf country.

During the visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 34 years, Modi will have bilateral talks with the leadership of world's second largest Arab economy and address the Indian diaspora, which forms about 30 per cent of UAE's population, said a Press Trust of India report.

He will seek to enhance cooperation in energy and trade and reach out to investors to hardsell India as an attractive business destination, it said.

Modi, ahead of his visit, described UAE as a "valued partner". This fact, he said, was reflected in India being UAE's second largest trading partner, while the nation was the third largest trading partner for the country.

The Prime Minister also lauded the immense contribution made by over 2.5 million Indians, who have made UAE their home, and said he was looking forward to meeting the large diaspora.

Indians in the UAE remit more than $13 billion annually.

Abu Dhabi will be the first port of call for the Prime Minister, who will hold extensive talks with Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He will address a gathering of Indians in Dubai at the Dubai Sports City on August 17. About 50,000 people are expected to attend the event.
