Dr Al Midfa ... all set for historic polls.

Sharjah Consultative Council polls tomorrow

SHARJAH, January 27, 2016

The Supreme Committee of Sharjah Consultative Council Elections will conduct the four-day long polls beginning tomorrow (January 28).

The first-of-its-kind exercise is being held under the slogan “Take Part in Decision-Making”.

The Elections Committee has already conducted several rounds of inspection of the polling stations across the Emirate to ensure high state of readiness for a smooth election, enabling the citizens to exercise their democratic right.

Dr Khalid Omar Al Midfa, head of the Media Committee of the SCC Elections, said that the counting of votes will commence on Sunday (January 31) itself, the last day of voting, at Al Qasimia University, with the whole process being telecast live on various television channels and media outlets of Sharjah Media Corporation.

The live transmission will continue throughout the night until the end of the counting and declaration of results.

Dr Al Midfa said that media centres with all necessary communication facilities have also been set up at polling stations across the Emirate, in addition to ensuring the presence of media coordinators to help the media cover the epoch-making elections in the Emirate smoothly and effectively.

“The media is our strategic partner and we are sparing no effort to provide them with the best of facilities and services so journalists can do their job with ease and to the best of their ability. This is our duty,” said Dr Al Midfa.

He reaffirmed the Electoral Committee’s keenness to ensure utmost transparency and accuracy at every stage and in all aspects of the 4-day long electoral exercise. “This is a celebration of democracy which the smiling Emirate of Sharjah truly deserves. This crowning moment has arrived after the journey of 16 long years and after a lot of hard work,” said Dr Al Midfa.

The success of the SCC poll process, he added, caps the successes and achievements of the Emirate over the past several years and translates the spirit of the Council to aid the leadership in the task of governance and involve the people in the decision-making process.

He said that polling stations for the nine electoral zones or constituencies have been set up across the Emirate. The nine constituencies include Sharjah City, Dhaid, Khorfakkan, Kalba, Dibba Al Hisn, Hamriyah, Bataeh, Maliha and Madam.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Committee of SCC Elections announced the end of the campaign in all its forms for all candidates, starting January 27, prohibiting candidates from using all means and methods of electoral campaigning or canvassing.

There are 195 candidates (152 male and 43 female) in the fray for half of the SCC seats in the first-of-its-kind election in the Emirate’s history.  Based on the directives of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, the slogan ‘Take Part in Decision Making’ has been adopted for the SCC polls. – TradeArabia News Service
