Clamp on seat belt violators

Dubai, June 28, 2007

Over 4,000 motorists have been fined for seat belt violations during the past week in Dubai.

A top Dubai Police official said traffic patrol vehicles have been stationed all over the emirate to intensify crackdown on errant drivers.

'Those violating rules face a Dh100 ($265) fine and will get three black points added to their driving licences,' Brigadier Muhammad Saif Al Zafeen, director of Dubai Police’s Traffic Department, was quoted as saying in the Arab News.

Dubai has a black points system that revokes a driving licence if a motorist acquires 24 black points in a year.

“We are pulling aside motorists and fining them. Of course we tell them that it is for their own good because we do not want them to fly out of their windscreens in case they get involved in an accident,” Al Zafeen said.
