NEW TOUGH LAWS

Bahrain plans penalty points for driving offences

MANAMA, September 14, 2014

Bahrain is planning to introduce penalty points for driving offences as part of the new traffic law, said a top official.

Under the new system, motorists are granted 20 points per year and any offence involves deduction of a certain number of points, Traffic Culture acting director Major Ussama Bahar was quoted as saying by the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

Drivers will have two points deducted if caught not wearing the safety belt, three points when refusing to produce identity documents and five points when exceeding speed limit by 30 per cent,

Violators will receive text messages about the number of deducted points. Once all points have been exhausted, the driving licence will be revoked for three months.

Repeat violators will have their driving licence withdrawn for six months and for one year if the offence is committed for the third time. If repeated, the driving licence will be revoked once and for all and the driver will have to undergo training all over again, Major Bahar said. – TradeArabia News Service
