Fibre-optics boost for traffic lights in Bahrain

MANAMA, October 1, 2014

State-of-the-art fibre-optics are being installed at traffic lights as part of a plan to improve Bahrain's road network, which includes widening roads, adding flyovers and junctions to reduce traffic congestion.

The Works Ministry's 2021 strategic plan was unveiled yesterday (September 30) in a press conference at the Information Affairs Authority, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

"The Works Ministry has set up a strategic plan to be achieved by 2021 in line with Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030," said Minister of State for Information Affairs and official government spokeswoman Sameera Rajab.

"It is a quantum leap in road network to improve and reduce traffic and improve the infrastructure to benefit Bahrain's citizens and residents."

In a report released to the Press, the Works Ministry outlined the upcoming changes to Bahrain's roads.

"The Works Ministry has a plan to connect all of the traffic lights with fibre-optic cables," the report said.

"At the moment, we have connected 16 traffic lights in Northern Manama with fibre-optics, which include Palace Avenue, Government Avenue, Shaikh Hamad Highway and ending at the King Faisal Highway.

"We hope that by the end of the year these will be running.

"It will work by using sensors on traffic lights to determine traffic flow and adjust the green lights accordingly."

The report also highlighted the changes that have already taken place.

"Junctions, intersections and flyovers, such as the Mina Salman flyover, have dramatically decreased traffic in the area," it said.

"Police reports have shown that the decrease in traffic is such that the journey from King Fahad Causeway to the Khalifa Bin Salman Port has decreased from 38 minutes to 18 minutes."

The ministry said that work will soon begin on Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway, between Alba and Nuwaidrat roundabouts.

"The plan includes establishing a three-level intersection, as well as swapping Alba roundabout with traffic lights," it said.

"There are also plans to create a two-way flyover, while renovating the stretch of Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway between those two roundabouts and renovating Road 15 which heads south from Nuwaidrat.

"We also want to create a two-way road, joining Ma'ameer and King Hamad Highway.

"We have also improved traffic congestion in several areas by removing roundabouts and replacing them with traffic lights, while widening highways and streets in other areas.

"These include Salmaniya junction, Hoora, Sanad, Ras Ruman, Government Avenue, Palace Avenue and A'ali.

"Meanwhile, we created roundabouts in smaller villages and roads in order to decrease speeding and improve safety." - TradeArabia News Service
