Tyres in UAE to get smartphone-friendly

Smart tyre tags to alert motorists in UAE

DUBAI, October 12, 2014

UAE is set to introduce smartphone-readable tags for tyres with information about their specifications in a bid to improve road safety, a report said.

Some tyres, though genuine, are not suitable for the UAE market, rendering their use dangerous, the Gulf News report quoted an official as saying.

Tyres designed for colder regions will not be able to withstand especially high temperatures in the UAE and could wear out faster or burst, the official said.

The mandatory tag system will be launched by the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma) and is expected to begin in 2015.

The tags will be readable by smartphones and confirm if the tyre is compliant with UAE specifications, the report said.

Using the Quick Response code readers on their phones, customers are able to determine instantly if the tyre meets UAE standards and which vehicle type it is meant for. There will also be an RFID chip that can be ready by inspectors using hand-held devices, the report said.
