Saudi may see 18m cars on roads by year-end

RIYADH, October 23, 2014

Saudi Arabia will likely see the number of licensed vehicles on its roads rise to 18 million by the end of 2014, from 17 million last year, a report said.

From 2011 to 2012, the number of licensed cars rose by 7 per cent to 15.9 million, added the Arab News report, citing a study published by Al-Eqtisadiah daily.

Makkah, Riyadh and the Eastern Province accounted for about 81 per cent of the registered vehicles in 2012.

Makkah registered 5.1 million vehicles, claiming a 32 per cent of the total of 12.8 million vehicles registered in the three provinces in that year, the report said, adding that Riyadh followed with 4.8 million registrations.

Vehicle traders in the kingdom paid SR356 billion ($95 billion) to import cars over the past six years. The cost of imports rose 3 per cent from SR77 billion ($20.5 billion) in 2012 to SR79 billion ($21 billion) last year, according to the study.
