Nissan shines in CDP Global 500 Climate Change Report 2014

Perfect score for Nissan in ‘green’ index report

JEDDAH, October 27, 2014

Nissan Motors, a global automobile leader, has scored a perfect “100A” in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index and as well as the Climate Performance Leadership Index (CPLI), as revealed in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Global 500 Climate Change Report 2014.

Nissan has been nominated as a CDP global leader for the second consecutive year.

This accomplishment recognises Nissan for its eco-friendly corporate policies and transparent information disclosure about its environmental performance. Nissan was among a few top responders awarded a perfect score of “100” in the (CDLI) for its extensive information disclosure about its environmental performance and corporate governance practices. It received the highest “A” rating in performance in the (CPLI) for its demonstrated actions to reduce CO2 emissions in its vehicle manufacturing processes.

These achievements were announced in the CDP Global 500 Climate Change Report 2014, which analyses companies' environmental strategies and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions based on the responses from the world's largest 500 listed corporations, and identifies the best performers. The 14th annual CDP index lists companies from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (Global 500) that demonstrate strategies designed to improve a company's impact on the environment. In this year's report, Nissan was one of a few elite companies in the CDP's CDLI to receive a perfect 100 score. Nissan also earned an “A" rating in the CPLI for its performance in reducing greenhouse gas emissions resulting from its corporate activities. This showing improved on its impressive results in 2013 when it placed in the top 10 per cent of all companies that were listed in the report.

This achievement shows that Nissan’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its corporate activities through widespread power conservation have been effective. Energy procurement is being shifted toward more sustainable sources, like biomass and solar power.

Last year, Nissan reduced CO2 emissions from global corporate activities while increasing vehicle production by 5.1 per cent. The 2.0 per cent cut in CO2 during the year put the company on track to achieve its goal of a 20 per cent reduction by fiscal year 2016, compared to 2005. Nissan set the target in its mid-term environmental action plan, the Nissan Green Program 2016 (NGP2016). CO2 emissions through Nissan's corporate activities have already been reduced by 15.4 per cent (t-CO2/vehicle) in fiscal year 2013.

The CDP was established in the UK in 2000 as an independent not-for-profit organisation and represents 767 investors representing $92 trillion in assets. Every year, the CDP organisation distributes standardised survey questions to private sector corporations and collects responses for assessment and public disclosure as a comprehensive barometer of climate change information.

Nissan's perfect performance in the CDLI and CPLI categories in the CDP's Global 500 report is recognition of its commitment to reduce its environmental impact and communicate proactively to consumers and other stakeholders about its corporate activities and innovative products. Through efforts to minimise its carbon footprint and an unwavering commitment to zero emissions motoring, Nissan will continue to strive to be an automaker that also leads in sustainable mobility. – TradeArabia News Service
