Aramco to shut key refinery for maintenance

Riyadh, December 20, 2011

Saudi Aramco plans to partially shut its 120,000 barrels per day (bpd) Riyadh refinery in January for planned maintenance, trading sources said.

The crude distillation unit (CDU) will be shut for at least 10 days from Jan. 11, one trading source said. It could remain offline up to 30 days, a second one added.

A 30,000 bpd hydrocracker would be down for 30 days from Jan. 6 while a 30,000 bpd catalytic reformer would be brought offline for 23 days from January 6, one of the sources said.

The refinery produces diesel, gasoline and fuel oil for domestic use.

"The gasoline and diesel supply will be affected, resulting in more gasoline imports (to the kingdom)" a trader said.

The state energy firm also plans to shut some units at its largest 550,000 bpd Ras Tanura refinery for maintenance in March, sources said last week. The Ras Tanura refinery alone supplies more than 30 percent of the kingdom's fuel demand.-Reuters
